Surprise!
After the steep rise in vehicle thefts in Canada over the past two years, they have decreased by 17% in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, according to a report by Équité Association, an anti-crime organization funded by insurance companies.
This decline is attributed to better collaboration between border authorities and police forces, governmental measures, and increased public awareness. Quebec saw the most significant drop of vehicle theft at 36%, while Ontario experienced a 14% decrease. However, thefts in Atlantic Canada rose by 11%.
Équité believes this increase is likely due to better deterrent measures in Quebec and Ontario. The organization emphasizes the need to focus on theft prevention to stop these crimes from occurring.
This report was released a few months after the National Summit on Vehicle Theft, where the federal government brought together industry stakeholders to discuss this issue.
